Our co-ordination didn't stand a chance!  Think of the reasons.  It doesn't take long to add up a few.  The smallest movement requires support from a co-ordinated system.   To stop over-thinking, to stop physical forcing?  We can let the system function without the pushing and seriousness that interrupts the natural flow of energy and breath.  When a decision is made - the body is capable of responding with strength and flexibility - or it was!!  The capability is there if we change the responses and let the whole system join in.

Small children practice

For a few years most small children seem to have a wonderful coordination brought about from lots of practice crawling, moving up and down, squatting and balancing on their feet.  Learning how the system of the body works as a complete unit. There is a wonderful openness about the way they proceed.  A looking around in wonder, joy and curiosity.

"Use of the Self" - a puzzle?

Alexander teachers are familiar with the term "use of the self".  When a person looks puzzled it is a reminder that this could be an uncommon description of how thoughts and actions determine the way the body works.  Is the puzzled look remaining?  Perhaps.  Another way of thinking about the use of the self is asking how co-ordinated are we?  Is the muscular system working in a coordinated and supportive way to let the breathing happen with fullness and free movement of the ribs? or are there parts holding back and compressing the action.
